Are you in a relationship where your partner belongs to a different race than yours?
This June 12 is celebrated Loving Day, a date that coincides with the anniversary of the decision of the United States Supreme Court that in 1967 put an end to all the existing laws in the country that prevented people of different races from getting married.
Although it has been legal for more than 40 years, marriage and couple relationships of different races still face many challenges, which are actually more problems that people outside the relationship have, than even these days cannot understand or bear the idea that two people of different races love each other, have children, and live happily.
In the United States, 1 in 7 marriages is between people of different races and the number of interracial couples continues to grow. You have probably run into a man of another race that you like, but would you go on a wedding with her?
Here are some things to keep in mind if you are looking for a relationship outside of your race:
Race and culture: Having a different skin color from yours does not make a person completely different. What makes her different are her values, her beliefs, her family traditions. When you have a boyfriend of another race, you are involved with another culture and probably another language. There are many things that you have to learn and respect from each other. More than biracial, you will have a multicultural relationship. And for your relationship to be not only lasting but also satisfying, both of you should try to get to know each other's culture as much as possible, and accept their beliefs and traditions.
Sensitivity: This is also part of the above. Perhaps some aspects of your relationship are very simple for you, but for your partner's culture they are somewhat complicated. Understand that the other person has a different background, and while it is true that it takes work to accept the differences of the other, you have to be especially sensitive in these cases.
The “others”: Maybe your family doesn't have problems with you having a boyfriend of another race, but there are many people who, even if they don't say it out loud, are uncomfortable with the situation. Unfortunately, there are many members of families who do not want their children, nephews, etc., to have a partner of another race and although in the end you will be the one to decide, you will have to deal with comments and expressions that are sometimes not at all appropriate. This is a part of the relationship that will be like a litmus test for both of you. The more united they are, the better they will be able to face those who do not tolerate or approve of your decision to be with someone of another race.
It is not personal: If there is someone in your partner's family who does not like you, do not take it personally. That person has likely had other expectations, especially regarding race. Your attitude may change over time, or it may never change, but it is also part of having a relationship with someone from another culture.
The worldview changes: Being part of a biracial couple turns your relationship into something multicultural. The way you see things will change, and you will be more sensitive and attentive to what affects your partner's culture and traditions.

It's a challenge: Having a strong relationship based on mutual respect is something that requires work. The same is true when it comes to a couple of people of different races. The first thing you should do is put aside the comments and attitudes of outsiders and focus on your relationship and your family. The rest is to do what is done in any couple: listen, respect and pamper yourself.
Happy Loving Day for all interracial couples!
