WHO YOU REALLY ARE?

When it comes to introducing ourselves, most of the people mention what we do for a living - "I am a teacher / doctor / I work in a department store …" - be it a professional career or a job. And if they ask us to describe ourselves, we immediately mention nationality, sex, age, marital status, religious affiliation, etc. But… are these the things that really make us who we are? A popular psychological exercise in many university classes is to describe ourselves … not to mention sex, age, religion, nationality, race, sexual orientation, marital status, or if we are a mom or girlfriend, professional or student. It is about delving deeper into our deepest self, and discovering who we really are, underneath all those labels that we are acquiring in our passage through life. Exercise is certainly not easy. What will you put on your list? Who are you, if you are not the executive secretary or the mother of …?

Do you really exist if you don't mention your race or religion? That is the challenge. Reflect on the things that, regardless of these characteristics, you do to yourself: your intelligence, humor, the unique way you see life, and the degree of compassion or generosity you exhibit. Take a few minutes to get in touch with that unrepeatable "I". Celebrate it, because it is what makes you unique.
