A healthy diet is one of the pillars to maintain good general health. People who eat well have been shown to get sick less and live fuller lives, with more energy and better moods, and generally tend to maintain an adequate weight. But what does eating well consist of? Who dictates what a balanced diet is? Because, due to some evolutionary defect, the natural instinct of the human being seems to be to eat everything that is put before him and that is appetizing.

The possible consequences do not govern what we feel like. If you doubt it, ask any mother who tries to control what their children put in their mouths. For this reason, those of us who care about our well-being need guidelines that help us make healthy and nutritious nutritional decisions. One such guide for the past several decades has been the food pyramid provided by the United States Department of Agriculture.

However, the food pyramid, even in its recently modified version, was not able to be clear and effective enough to determine the proportions that we must consume of each of the food groups. On the other hand, many critics argue that it did not determine the differences between certain foods within the same group: a white flour bread is not the same as a whole grain bread, nor can the proteins from fish be put at the same level as the of the bacon.

The current government, in its effort to reduce obesity and improve the eating habits of Americans led by First Lady Michelle Obama, now sets out to replace the classic pyramid with a new method with a circular plate, which is intended to simplify and to facilitate understanding of the recently released Dietary Guidelines for Americans, with four different color sections for fruits, vegetables, grains, and protein, accompanied by a smaller plate for dairy. Let's hope that the dish is more effective and less controversial than the pyramid, and that it helps us to shape the menu!
