The price of a famous hamburger or a popular refreshing drink, both widely spread around the world, is often used as an economic indicator for the analysis of some regions or countries. To me, who is very far from being an economist, this has always seemed a bit absurd to me. First, because these prices are given in dollars and often without considering people's wages and the rest of the parameters of their standard of living, more in line with local needs. And second, because how many people in other regions of the world eat or worry about the price of that little roll with "meat" and the price of a little sugar water, glorified by advertising?

I was thinking about that while searching the supermarket for a soda that wasn't sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup and contained no artificial colors - those color names followed by a number that are infamous for being carcinogenic. I wanted to indulge my children's cravings without compromising my dedication to feeding them in the healthiest way possible.

So it occurred to me to ask myself, what would happen to the economic indicators of consumption, and even to the economy itself, if suddenly a large number of people became infected with my obsession and began to read the labels carefully? What would happen if consumers stopped buying all foods made with harmful or suspicious ingredients? What would producers and distributors do with the tons of partially hydrogenated oils, unpronounceable name preservatives and excessive amounts of salt, just to name a few examples? It is hard to imagine.

In that idyllic world, chances are that I would have spent less on the orange sodas that I finally managed to find and that the children liked so much: They only contained juice and carbonated water, but they were much more expensive. How novel!
