The American Academy of Family Physicians explains that migraines appear to be caused by changes in the levels of serotonin (a neurotransmitter that controls mood) in the body. When these drop, the blood vessels dilate and that is when they arise.
Some symptoms, such as hypersensitivity to light, cause the daily routine of those with this condition to be altered. However, there are measures to prevent and reduce migraine.
The Academy recommends: sleep well, about eight hours a day; reduce the level of stress you may have at work or at home; avoid foods that have tyramine, sodium nitrates, or phenylalanine. Some of these are: past-dated, canned, cured, or processed meats (including ham and hot dogs), alcoholic beverages, especially red wine; soy sauce, lentils, chocolate and caffeine.
In addition, there are other factors that could trigger a migraine in the particular case of women: the arrival of menstruation and taking birth control pills or hormones.
What other measures should you take to prevent them? The Academy suggests: breakfast and three meals a day; try to be in a harmonious environment. Do not expose yourself to strong odors, bright light, or loud noises. Watch out for changes in temperature or height.
