It's been a long time and many miles have been covered in training and competition races, since the runners began experimenting with the first walkmans and sweating accompanied by their favorite music. Then came CDs, later MP3 players, so light and tiny that weight and comfort were no longer a consideration for athletes. However, running with music has not stopped being controversial, with as many supporters as detractors.

For example, when I run outdoors I have always preferred natural sounds and the possibility of letting myself be carried away by my thoughts, while other people are inspired and rely on the rhythm to cover their distances. But beyond preferences, there are the factors supported by science and even some of a legal nature (several states consider banning that combination of activities as has been done with driving and talking on the phone).

While scientists studying the brain try to figure out how music affects coordination and movement, it is undeniable that the kind of music you listen to when you run can help intensify effort and speed up your pace or relax and slow down, that is why it is so important to create a selection, be it salsa, rock or bachata, each runner must find what motivates him and fits his taste and style. On the other hand, it is quite obvious that if we isolate ourselves completely from the sound environment, we expose ourselves to dangers that we are not able to prevent, and that is why if you are going to listen to music, it is preferable that you do not have the volume too high and that you pay attention additional to the environment.

Whatever your inclination in this debate, music remains an excellent motivation to keep you fit. And if hearing aids were banned while running or proved too harmful, you would always have the option to run singing!
