One of the basic differences between type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes is that while there is nothing known that we can do to prevent the former, the latter can be avoided with an active lifestyle and a balanced diet that allows us, between other benefits, maintaining an adequate body weight.

Perhaps one of the main causes of the increase in blood sugar is the consumption of carbohydrates that have a high glyceric index. But if you are one of those who has a weakness for foods made with white flour, chips and soft drinks and sweet juices, you are left with a somewhat paradoxical resource to reduce risk: alcoholic beverages.

A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that middle-aged women who ate a lot of refined carbohydrates and drank a moderate amount of alcohol had a 30% lower risk of being diabetic. The research was based on more than 80,000 women over a 26-year period. Women who consumed more refined carbohydrates and a lot of meat were more likely to be diabetic, but within that same group those who consumed alcoholic drinks in moderation reduced the risk.

However, it is not like to start preparing for the spree, because the moderation is serious: we are talking about 0.8 ounces of alcohol a day, that is, about two drinks a week. Also, keep in mind that doctors are constantly recommending that refined carbohydrates be reduced for a healthy diet.
