The first time I heard about the Mediterranean Diet, what came to mind was not a nutritional plan developed by someone to lose weight and improve health, much less something involving deprivation, but rather the diet of the countries in that geographical area. And it turns out that, knowing more about what it was, I found that it was not so far from the truth. As its name indicates, the Mediterranean Diet is based on the way the Greeks, Italians, Spaniards, and even the inhabitants of North Africa and the Middle East eat: a diet rich in fish, fruits and vegetables, beans, nuts, aromatic herbs, cheeses and yogurt (but not milk), lots of olive oil and a few glasses of red wine. The dishes of that region are as varied as the countries and cultures, and the flavors so intense and different that they can satisfy the most demanding palates.

But is it really healthy to consume such a load of calories, much of it from fat? Scientists, with irrefutable statistics, agree that it is. And this is known as the “Mediterranean paradox”: people who eat this way tend to suffer much less from heart disease and are overweight. Furthermore, the incidence of cancer, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases is much lower. It is true that the Mediterranean way of eating combines an active and more relaxed lifestyle, but it is not difficult to adapt that reality to our environment.
