The festive atmosphere of Christmas seems to start earlier every year. If at least before waiting for Thanksgiving to pass, many stores are beginning to decorate with Christmas motifs before removing the turkey and pilgrim decorations. These extended Christmases - before, during and after December 25 - are accompanied by delicious meals at work, at home, and anywhere we visit. And while it is true that most Christmas foods are high in calories and low in nutrition, with a few tricks it is also possible to celebrate without neglecting the effort to eat healthy and stay fit.

Here are some tips to avoid falling into temptations and avoid gaining those extra pounds after you've spent the year trying to maintain a healthy weight:

1- Have a good breakfast. For the most important meal of the day, don't limit yourself to a latte and some toast. A balanced breakfast with protein and fruit will prevent you from spending the day chopping everything in front of you.

2- Overcome the temptation. When you find yourself before the sources of sweets and treats such as nougats and Christmas cakes, go long and opt for fresh fruits, nuts, hazelnuts, almonds and pistachios, which also tend to be abundant in this season.

3- Fill the vegetable plate more. Whether it's pork, lamb, beef or fish, you don't have to stop eating meats if you control the portion and choose cuts with less fat. But try to limit sauces and consume more vegetables

4- Drink with sanity. Forget about soft drinks. Instead, drink fruit juices, water with a lemon wedge, or carbonated water. With alcohol, be selective and drink in moderation. Make sure not to start too early, and if you have the will power, control the amount of coquito or eggnog, which in addition to being loaded with calories are usually addictive!

5- Go for a walk. After dinner, go for a relaxing, digestion-friendly walk. Also, so you burn one or another more calories. Of course, wrap yourself warm if it is cold, and if you are lucky enough to enjoy a white Christmas, be sure to put on a pair of warm boots to walk in the snow.
