Fruits are included in almost all the food lists that we must consume to stay healthy, and they are also part of many plans or diets to lose weight. This, of course, is no accident. Like vegetables, most fruits belong to the group known as low energy density foods, which is nothing but those foods that have a low calorie content for every gram. On the other hand, in addition to the wide variety of shapes and flavors that can satisfy the most demanding tastes, fruits are an excellent source of dietary fiber, as well as vitamins and minerals that our body needs.
However, all its "virtues" do not mean that fruits cannot make us fat like any other food, especially if we consume them indiscriminately, without worrying about the size of the portions or the differences between them. Although the key is moderation, both people with certain diseases that force them to regulate sugar in their diet and those of us who pay close attention to calories, we must take into account several points:
• Some fruits “fatten” more than others: Some fruits have a higher concentration of natural sugars and starches. Among the sweetest and most dangerous for the diet are bananas, mangoes, grapes, cherries, and raisins (of any fruit).
• They are not the same natural as canned: To limit damage, avoid canned fruits that contain abundant syrups and other additives.
• Attention with smoothies: With an additional load of sugar, preservatives and coloring, fruit smoothies can be treacherous. If you are not clear what the ingredients are, limit yourself to the ones you prepare yourself, however healthy and natural they assure you they are.
• Juices are not fruit: Natural juices are not an exact equivalent of the whole fruit. The main difference is that the juices deprive the nutrition of the pulp and peel. Juices (always 100% and no added sugar!) Can complement fruit consumption, but not substitute it.
