Many of the most famous pop groups have come to us from England. And as if not to be left behind, now from the country that gave us the Beatles, Elton John and Queen comes the Fast Diet, the promise of losing weight, staying healthy and extending life in one product. The promoter of this diet is a doctor and television announcer, Dr. Michael Mosley. His nutritional plan, which was originally featured in a BBC documentary and aired in a three-part series on PBS, invites us to reduce calorie intake to a quarter of normal for two non-consecutive days of the week: about 500 and 600 calories daily for women and men respectively.

Dr. Mosley says it is based on animal and human studies, as well as more than a dozen clinical tests of intermittent fasting. While considering the effects of starvation mode to be a myth, he claims that his diet is not the same as others that propose starvation and expose us to dangerous side effects. On the contrary, according to him, Fast Diet would help us lose fat without reducing muscle mass … and even make us less likely to suffer from diseases related to aging such as Alzheimer's. Some experts have been surprised by the way this regimen lowers bad cholesterol levels, blood pressure and increases the feeling of physical well-being.

But Dr. Mosley himself acknowledges that the diet is still in the research stage and that like many of the great scientific discoveries, it began through a process of self-experimentation. Effective or not, it does not seem so radical that it is not worth trying, but be sure to consult your doctor first.
