Who doesn't love to show off beautiful tanned skin? It's normal for us to want to look especially beautiful when it comes to a special event like a wedding, dance, or vacation. However, more and more scientists agree that tanning chambers pose a great danger to health.

Melanoma, or skin cancer, used to appear in the elderly, who had spent much of their lives exposed to the sun. However, recent clinical studies have found that this disease has become the new epidemic, mainly in women between 18 and 39 years old who have undergone tanning chambers.

Dr. Susan Swetter, professor of dermatology at the Stanford Cancer Institute explains: "When people receive sporadic but intense exposure to UV rays, they extremely affect DNA, creating malignant changes in cells, which eventually develops into a melanoma. Once the DNA mutation occurs, the cells become much more susceptible to developing cancer. It is a cumulative effect."

Scientific studies show that even a single visit to the tanning room can cause irreparable harm: a 2 percent increase in chances of getting skin cancer for each visit. In addition, visiting the tanning chamber before a vacation only increases the dangers, it is about “frying” the skin first in an intense and abrupt way in the salon, and then exposing it to the UVA and UVB rays naturally emitted by the sun.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer is the most common type of this disease in the United States, and also the one with the highest mortality rate. The Academy recognizes May 6 as the official day of melanoma and invites people to understand that there is no “healthy” tan and that sunscreen is essential for skin care.

Starting in May, the national skin cancer awareness month, the Neutrogena® “Buy 1 + Donate 1” campaign will provide one dollar of each brand product with SPF to the neediest families. The promotion will be valid until July.
