In the world of marketing, the presentation and packaging of products play a key role in the way we perceive them as consumers and, therefore, in whether we decide to buy them or not. Hence, it is common to read statements about products such as: "does not contain cholesterol", "low in calories", "natural", "organic" or "fat-free", just to mention a few. But just as important as what is said about food is the color of the packaging it comes in.

Now a new study published in the magazine Health Communication has concluded that even the color of the labels that have the information on calories makes us think that we are going to consume something healthier. According to the authors, researchers at Cornell University, people are inclined to think that green-labeled candy bars are healthier than red or white-labeled candy bars. What is paradoxical and alarming is that this effect is more marked in people who give more importance to healthy eating, and that the "victims" of the mirage are prone to detract from the nutritional and caloric data, that is, the way of the message is imposed on the content.

In a press release, Jonathon Schuldt, assistant professor of communications and director of the Cornell Laboratory of Cognition and Social Communication, stressed that there is currently little control and regulation over these types of labels, which at the same time are increasingly common in the front of the products, and that as much attention should be paid to the color and design of the labels as to the nutritional information they provide.

So, if you want to eat healthy, enjoy the design of the packages, celebrate all you want the colors, but be sure to read what each product contains and be guided by that information.
