Eating tacos, tortas and sauces is a delight, but doing it in excess could also be what is driving Mexico to become one of the most obese countries in the world.

A new report from the United Nations and the Food and Agricultural Organization revealed that Mexico has surpassed the United States as the country with the most fat problems. Data from a 2008 study shows that 32.8 percent of Mexicans are considered obese. For its part, the American nation has 31.8 percent of citizens who suffer from the same condition.

Likewise, the entity relates the findings to the fact that almost 50 percent of the Mexican population lives in poverty, and they resort to less healthy but cheaper food options.

The organization defines obese people as people with excessive accumulation of fat according to the body mass index, which generates general health problems. Furthermore, it suggests that obesity is a form of malnutrition.

According to the National Institutes of Health, being obese increases your risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and certain cancers.

For its part, among the countries with the highest obesity rates are Belize, several islands in Oceania, New Zealand, Chile and Argentina. Others such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Luxembourg and Finland also have very high rates.
