If you are one of those who read without fail what food labels say before buying them, surely you have come across several words that are repeated. The most frequent ?: "natural", "real", "improved", "organic". The reason? These words have a great influence on buyers and are key when deciding whether to choose the product or not. And for those who are concerned about losing a few pounds or maintaining their weight, the magic word is usually light. If a food has this word written, not only do we think it is the most appropriate to consume, but we also end up eating it excessively. But how can these foods influence your diet and your health?

According to the regulations established by the Food and Drug Administration of the United States, for a food to be classified as light (sometimes written as lite) without any additional clarification, it must have a considerable reduction in the content of fats, sodium or calories. However, this does not necessarily mean that they are healthy or that they guarantee weight loss. As recent studies have shown, the effect is actually just the opposite.

Light Food Hazards

Excessive consumption of light foods can increase body fat and even affect important organs such as the kidneys, causing sugar and fat levels to rise excessively, while ingesting other necessary nutrients. Here are some negative factors that can be hidden behind light products:

1. When sugar is not used, it is replaced with artificial sweeteners like aspartame. This substance can affect people with liver disease and pregnant women.

2. Some foods may contain less fat, but more carbohydrates. Others in turn have fewer carbohydrates, but contain more fats.

3. Being low in calories does not guarantee quality. It is more advisable to eat a good food in moderation than a light one with no nutritional value.

4. Good fats, like olive oil, are high in calories, but are healthier than trans fats (like margarine), however light they are.

5. Most processed foods, many of them light, contain preservatives, artificial colors and flavors.
