  • Hormone Beware: Birth control pills and hormone replacement treatments can narrow blood vessels and weaken valves and vein walls. Dr. Navarro recommends that especially people with a family predisposition to have varicose veins should "avoid contraceptive pills and hormone replacement."
  • Use an extra layer of muscle: Graded elastic bands provide additional protection and strengthen "second heart" performance and circulation. Dr. Navarro recommends wearing compression stockings of 18 to 22 mm mercury.
  • A change of position: Standing or sitting for a long time can cause varicose veins to appear and make their condition worse. Try to raise your feet 6 to 12 inches above the heart whenever you can.
  • It does not affect Hispanic women anymore, but … Dr. Navarro assures that there is no greater incidence of varicose veins among Latina women, but explains that "diet influences, especially because constipation must be prevented."
