Some cannot live without it, others do not dare to touch it, some consume it but only in moderation … but it is undeniable that the spicy can change the flavor of any dish, and even end up giving it that unique touch that chefs seek in your kitchen. Also, as you may have heard, another benefit of spicy is that it accelerates metabolism, an advantage especially for those who are trying to burn more calories to lose weight. But, has it ever crossed your mind that spicy can also reduce the risk of death ? Here at Siempre Mujer we explain why.

A recent analysis of the diet of nearly half a million people, published by The BMJ, formerly known as the British Medical Journal, concluded that the spicy, in effect, lengthens life. The researchers recruited study participants between 2004 and 2008, and were analyzing their habits on average for a period of more than seven years, during which more than twenty thousand deaths were recorded.

The study took into account not only family medical history, but also age, education, smoking and diabetes, among other possible factors, and it was observed that people who ate spicy foods once or twice a the week they had a 10% less risk of losing their lives than those who only consumed spicy less than once a week. Taking these statistics into account, and if you have enough tolerance for spicy, consider these numbers: those who ate spicy six to seven times a week reduced the risk of dying by 14%.

Although the study authors do not make definitive conclusions and assure that it is the subject of future studies, they do point out that capsaicin, the main component of hot peppers, has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. These are other illnesses and conditions that were reduced with the consumption of spicy:

Cardiac ischemia rates

  • Respiratory diseases
  • Various types of cancer

If you dare to incorporate the spicy into your diet, you should follow the advice given by the renowned chef Aarón Sánchez to the newspaper El Diario de Nueva York and “balance the hot chili or hot sauces with an onion sauce, sweet peppers and garlic, cooked slowly in a little oil so that the onion is caramelized. This helps balance the level of itchiness without sacrificing the flavor of the chili or sauce used.”

You can choose between the most common hot chili varieties, such as poblano, jalapeño, habanero, serrano, cherry and Thai chili.
