The company CFR Frozen Foods announced that it will recall 358 products from 42 different brands due to possible listeria contamination.
Possibly affected products have expiration dates between April 26, 2016 and April 26, 2018, and were distributed in the 50 states of the United States, Mexico and some provinces of Canada (British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan). If you purchased any of these products, you can return them to the store and request a refund.
It is one of the largest food recalls in memory, encompassing more than 350 CRF Frozen Foods products in Pasco, Washington, sold under more than 40 brands at stores such as Costco, Target, Trader Joe's and Safeway. So far, eight people have been infected with genetically similar listeria to that found in CRF vegetables and two have died, although listeria was not the leading cause of death. "Undoubtedly, there are many products … It reflects the severity of listeria as a disease, the long duration of disease and the outbreak, and that the products are long-lived," said Matthew Wise, director of the outbreak response team at the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CRF plant closed two weeks ago and the company is still trying to determine the source of the contamination, Grabowski said. The CDC says that listeriosis is more serious in adults over 65 because of a weakened immune system and in pregnant women. It is fatal in 18% of cases. In this outbreak, six of the eight patients were from California. The two dead were from Maryland and Washington.
A few days ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced the existence of an outbreak of listeriosis, a lethal disease caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.
CRF Frozen Foods apologized for the inconvenience it has caused its customers and consumers and suspended operations at the plant.
Listeria is a different bacteria than others because it can grow even in the cold temperatures of a refrigerator and can cause serious, sometimes fatal, infections in young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Healthy adults can experience symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirth in pregnant women.
