We grew up with the myth that all fats are bad for our health, hearing statements such as "fats increase cholesterol and cause heart disease", "to lose weight it is necessary to eliminate all fats", "fats produce overweight and obesity". The reality is that it has recently been discovered that not only are there good fats, but they are also essential for maintaining optimal health and weight. I mean, we need our fat!
What are the types of fats and where are they found?
Basically there are two types: saturated and unsaturated.
Saturated and trans (bad) fats increase LDL cholesterol and thereby increase the risk of heart attacks, atherosclerosis and strokes. They are solid. You find them in milk and its derivatives, in lard, margarine and some animal proteins such as beef and yolk. You also find them in a large part of processed edible products. It does not mean that we should completely stop consuming these products, but rather that we should reduce their consumption, opting for a greater amount of good fats (an ideal proportion would be 30% saturated and 70% unsaturated).
Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are good fats, you find them in a raw liquid state. They help reduce cholesterol in the blood. They are in some vegetable oils, such as olive oil, sesame oil, sunflower oil. They are also found in large proportions in some fish that contain omega 3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, sardines, anchovies, mackerel, etc. Avocado, walnuts, and nuts are other examples of products rich in healthy fats.
Why should we consume good fats?
Fats cause the body to properly process and absorb vitamins, especially A, D, E, and K. This helps the body's various systems work better, including the immune system, skin, and brain. They provide essential fatty acids for growth, especially in children. They help in the formation of membranes and nervous tissue. Along with exercise, they help build more muscle. They are the basic energy source for our body. They help stabilize mood, fighting depression and other emotional disorders.
Now that you know this, I invite you to consume and feed your family with healthy fats, so that they can enjoy all its health benefits.
