Unfortunately yes. Every extreme is bad, and in this case that extreme is called orthorexia and it is a category within eating disorders, which include anorexia and bulimia.

How to know if someone suffers from orthorexia?

In general, the most affected group are young, athletic women of medium to high socioeconomic status. If you have any of the following signs, there is a possibility that you are suffering from orthorexia:

- Spend more than three hours a day thinking about healthy food for that day, particularly the "quality" of the food to eat.

- Consume only and strictly organic food, without preservatives or additives of any kind and under no circumstances leave this regime.

- Decreased quality of life as a result of diet. For example, he no longer goes out with friends, he avoids situations where he has to eat something less healthy, he isolates himself.

- Great feelings of guilt when leaving the diet, to the point of being punished more the following days with an even greater food restriction.

What causes this disorder?

Among the causes are great insecurity in itself, low self-esteem, perhaps the product of childhood trauma. The media also has a lot to do with it, as they broadcast incorrect examples of what a healthy and normal body should be like, with extremely thin models leading to malnutrition. A woman who is insecure by herself may be more susceptible to being influenced by these unreal patterns of supposed perfection.

Which is the treatment?

As with all other eating disorders, professional help is needed in an interdisciplinary team that includes at least a physician, psychologist, and nutritionist.
