Dysthymia, also called dysthymic disorder, is defined as a type of mood or affective disorder that often resembles a less severe but more chronic form of major depression. However, people who have dysthymia can also sometimes experience episodes of major depression.
You may lose interest in normal activities of daily living, feel hopeless, become unproductive, and have low self-esteem and a general feeling of inadequacy. These feelings last for years and can affect your relationships and your performance at school, at work, and in daily activities.

If you have this persistent depressive disorder, you may find it difficult to feel optimistic even on happy occasions. They may describe you as pessimistic or negative, they may think you complain all the time or that you are unable to have fun.
Although persistent depressive disorder is not as severe as major depression, your current depressed mood can be mild, moderate, or severe.
Some signs to be aware of for this disorder:
Poor appetite
- Loss of interest in daily activities
- Insomnia or hypersomnia
