The keto diet is said to be dangerous, terrible, and one of the worst to follow. But is this diet really that bad? And why are they saying this? Medically proven, the keto diet can help decrease the likelihood of type II diabetes, aid weight loss, aid skin and decrease acne.

It can also help fight some types of cancer, and it helps heart health by lowering LDL (bad cholesterol) levels and increasing HDL (good cholesterol) levels.

Other benefits that have been seen is that it can help protect the brain, help decrease seizures in patients with epilepsy, and it can also help women who have a problem called Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. So why is it as bad as some say? Through the internet and social networks, the possible complications and negative effects of this diet are mentioned a lot.

Also, there are many people giving bad advice and bad nutritional options for this diet. When patients come to see me and tell me what they are eating. I realize that they have no idea how to do a keto diet and a lot of this is due to bad advice through social media.

For you to be well informed, the keto diet, like any other diet, can have negative effects, some can be seen during the first weeks, but most manifest in the long term, since this diet is not recommended for more than three months in a row.

The different types of possible complications that the keto diet can cause in the short term are: constipation, fatigue or loss of energy, and low sugar levels. It can also cause cold symptoms which is known as the "keto flu", this tends to occur during the first two weeks, but disappears only days later.

Problems that can occur in the long term are: loss of muscle mass, high levels of acid in the blood (acidosis), and possible formation of stones in the kidneys.

Tip of the week: The keto diet is very good and effective for weight loss, but it is not recommended to do it for more than 28 consecutive days. If you are going to start this diet, just follow the advice of certified nutritionists or doctors who know this type of diet. Also consult your doctor before starting, especially if you have diabetes, hypoglycemia (low sugar), or heart problems.
