You probably remember when the famous Olympic medalist Michael Phelps appeared during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games with very peculiar bruises on his back. This aroused much curiosity, until they finally clarified that the athlete had received a therapy known as cupping or vacuum therapy.
We asked our facial care specialist and therapist specializing in oriental medicine, Dr. Maribel Pedrozo, Beauty Alchemist, to explain us about this therapy and what benefits we can expect.
“This treatment has been carried out since ancient times in countries as remote as Mesopotamia; however, here on this side of the world athletes and some celebrities have revived it for the excellent results that can be obtained.”
Celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Aniston, Victoria Beckham, Nicole Richie, Justin Bieber and various athletes such as Michael Phelps and gymnast Alex Naddour recommend it for the results they can achieve to relieve their muscle pain.
However, I find it very curious how a treatment that leaves those bruises can be effective and healthy.
Let's talk about the method of applying this therapy first, Pedrozo explained. This is carried out using a glass or rubber cup, the glass ones are heated inside to create a vacuum and the rubber ones are squeezed to create the suction and extract the air.
When applied to the face, for face cupping it is only necessary a kit of suction cups adapted to the size of the face and a serum or oil that facilitates its sliding. On clean skin, the serum is applied first, and then massage with the suction cups.
Tips to take care of your eyebrows like a professional
Something important that we must clarify, pointed out the specialist, is that the face cupping version does not leave marks or bruises.
Why does it work as a rejuvenating treatment?
Because it improves blood circulation and the lymphatic system. With this, the cellular production of collagen and elastin is enhanced, they help correct bags and accelerate skin cleansing. As soon as the treatment is finished, the skin is brighter, smoother and without signs of fatigue.
Now, the rejuvenating results of face cupping only last a few hours. However, its immediacy has positioned it as one of the most requested care before a red carpet or some important event.
On the other hand, if you want to enhance its action in the long term, experts recommend regularly massaging the face, neck and décolleté with the suction cup, for 5 or 10 minutes and 2 or 3 times a week. With this routine, in addition to reducing wrinkles and bags, they will achieve more luminosity and help them to improve the predisposition of the skin to receive the action of other products.
