Although the base (or foundation) is one of the most common products in our beauty routine, many women make mistakes when applying it, which hurts us more than benefits us.

Faced with such a common problem, we set out to talk to Lindsay Kastuk, makeup artist and editorial makeup professional in New York, to find out once and for all what the hell is we doing wrong with our base and how to get the most out of it advantage.

First things first, what is the base for?

Lindsay Kastuk explains that the technical function of any foundation is to cover the skin to create a perfect canvas for your makeup. And why do we use it? There are actually different reasons: to match your skin tones, cover marks or scars, to have a matte look, or simply because you like how it looks.

But if you have to create a perfect canvas, why does the base sometimes make our skin look dry and some wrinkles more visible? According to the expert, here we have several factors to take into account: texture, dryness and the type of base you are using.

How to choose the perfect color for your hair according to your skin tone

The first is that the base does not serve to hide texture, but rather highlights it; therefore, it is based on wrinkles and more if your base is matte. “To help with this I recommend applying the base with a soft brush with separate tips to give you a light brush look. This will allow you to put less product on your face, which means less product on your wrinkles."

And what about the dry look? This is usually related to the state of your skin. "If your foundation makes your face look dry, it is because you have dehydrated skin," explains the makeup artist. For this it is recommended to hydrate very well before your makeup; remember that preparing your skin correctly is very important.

The other factor to consider is that you are probably using a base that is too matte, which tends to further highlight your skin's textures, in addition to drying it out a bit. Given this, Kastuk recommends using bases with a satin or dewy effect.

So how do we choose the correct base?

For Lindsay, searching for the perfect foundation is like searching for skin care products. A delicate mission. We must understand that the bases work differently in each type of skin and not because a brand works for your friend, it should work for you too.

To find the perfect foundation you must first know what type of skin you have. This will reduce the options, leaving only those indicated for your skin. Next, you should know what type of coverage you want: a light one that allows you to see your freckles? One that makes your skin look illuminated? Or one with dense coverage?

“Finding the perfect foundation takes time and is a bit of trial and error; however, it is very important to choose the ideal product, otherwise, you will never be happy with how you look with makeup,”says Kastuk.

And not because it is trial and error you should leave a thousand dollars in products that do not serve you, that is why the makeup artist advises us to order as many samples as possible. “The samples are your best friends! Go to your local Sephora or cosmetic store and ask for samples of the bases that interest you. So you test before investing in a whole bottle.”

And how long does a base last us?

Don't forget that all bases have an expiration date! To know how long yours will last you must look under the container. There you will find an icon accompanied by a number, usually 6M or 12M. "This means that, after opening, your product will last 6 or 12 months, and all beauty products have it."
