Atopic dermatitis (DA), also called atopic eczema, is a common skin allergy that usually begins in early childhood. It can be associated with skin infection (bacteria, fungi, candida, and viruses). Half of patients with moderate to severe AD also suffer from asthma, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), and food allergies. The main symptom is itchy skin. The skin is also usually dry. Scratching makes the skin red, irritated and thickened.

To find out how we can treat this type of skin disorder, we spoke with dermatologist Anabelle García, who explained everything you need to know to alleviate these symptoms and delved into a novel treatment that is having good results with her patients.

This is Dupixent®, a drug approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for children from 6 to 11 years old with moderate to severe uncontrolled atopic dermatitis, and can also be used in adults.

In the trial of this treatment, more than twice as many children achieved fair or almost transparent skin and more than four times managed to reduce itching.

Three-quarters of the patients receiving Dupixent achieved at least a 75% improvement in overall disease, with an average improvement of approximately 80%.
